The European Union (EU) Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive In 2004, the European Parliament and Council passed the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive to "protect human health and the environment by restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in new equipment". The RoHS directive covers the same scope of electrical and electronic equipment that are under the WEEE directive, except that Category 8, Medical Devices, and Category 9, Monitoring and Control Instruments, which are under WEEE, are excluded from the RoHS directive. Symmetricom's Timing, Test & Measurement Division: The following product categories in Symmetricom's Timing, Test & Measurement Division fall under Category 9, which is currently outside of the EU RoHS directive's scope: GPS and Time Code Instrumentation Time and Frequency Distribution Precise Frequency References/Atomic Oscillators Bus Level Timing Time Displays Space, Defense and Avionics Products The following product categories from the Timing, Test and Measurement Division of Symmetricom fall under Category 3 (IT and Telecommunications Equipment), including the RoHS exemption covering the use of lead in "solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications" and should comply with the RoHS directive. Symmetricom products are used in various applications that may affect customer requirements for RoHS compliance.  In most instances, Symmetricom customers do not require EU RoHS compliant products, including customers using Symmetricom products for development or production of their end products that fall outside the scope of the EU RoHS directive, as well as customers who embed a Symmetricom product in an end product that is classified under either Category 8 or Category 9 of WEEE. A Symmetricom product that is a component of an end product requires EU RoHS compliance only if the end product falls within the EU RoHS directive's scope.  Symmetricom's Telecom Solutions Division: The following product categories in Symmetricom’s Telecom Solutions Division fall under Category 3 of WEEE (IT and Telecommunications Equipment) and are covered by the EU RoHS directive: Primary Reference Sources Edge Clocks and Distributors BITS/SSU Systems Telecom Software OEM Subsystems and Components Broadband Network Our primary products in the above categories comply with the EU RoHS directive, including the use of the RoHS exemption covering "the use of lead in solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications". The China Ministry of Information Order #39 (China RoHS) Symmetricom is committed to meeting all applicable emerging requirements related to the China Ministry of Information Order #39, "Administrative Measures on the Control of Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products," commonly referred to as China-RoHS.  Products ordered for sale in the People's Republic of China will include the appropriate Environmental Protection Use Period (EPUP) label on the product, hazardous substances table and recycling mark on packaging according to the applicable regulatory requirements and standards.  Symmetricom will also ensure continuous compliance with China-RoHS as additional requirements are finalized by the Chinese regulators.    For more information on Symmetricom's China-RoHS program, please send email to: RoHS@symmetricom.com.    Symmetricom recognizes that eliminating certain hazardous substances from our products is beneficial not only to the environment but also to Symmetricom’s customers and employees, and we are working towards ensuring that our products comply with the EU and China RoHS directives wherever possible.  In our continuing efforts to achieve RoHS compliance for our products, the Symmetricom RoHS Compliance Team is actively working with our component suppliers to ensure their compliance with the RoHS directives.  Additionally, Symmetricom manufacturing and engineering teams are currently working to adapt our products to use RoHS compliant components and manufacturing processes.
